⛪ Cathedral Church of Saint Michael the Archangel

(Saborna crkva Svetog arhangela Mihaila)

Located in the heart of Belgrade, just steps from Kalemegdan Fortress, the Cathedral Church of Saint Michael the Archangel is one of the most significant religious and cultural landmarks in Serbia. Commonly referred to as Saborna Crkva, this Serbian Orthodox cathedral has stood as a spiritual center and symbol of national identity for nearly two centuries.

🕍 Built between 1837 and 1840, the church was commissioned by Prince Miloš Obrenović and designed by architect Adam Friedrich Kwerfeld in a classical style with baroque elements. It was constructed on the site of an earlier church destroyed by the Ottomans.

🙏 The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, a powerful symbol of protection and spiritual strength in Christian tradition.

🎨 Inside, visitors can admire beautifully preserved iconostasis and frescoes, created by some of the most prominent 19th-century Serbian artists, including Dimitrije Avramović and Pavle Simić. The interior is rich in gold, wood carvings, and religious icons, reflecting the importance of Orthodox Christian heritage.

🪦 The church also serves as the final resting place of notable historical figures such as Vuk Karadžić (the reformer of the Serbian language) and Dositej Obradović (a key figure of the Serbian Enlightenment).

📍 Location: Kneza Sime Markovića Street, Stari Grad, Belgrade
🕒 Open daily to visitors, especially during service hours.
